Between 2018 and 2021, Spain's trade in coffee extracts showed robust growth. Imports rose from 14 630 tons to 24 413 tons, despite a temporary drop in 2020, while exports expanded from 41 960 tons to 57 171 tons, reflecting strong international demand for Spanish products.

From 2022 onwards, domestic production peaked at 62 631 tons before falling to 50 173 tons in 2024. The market size contracted from 31 117 tons to 27 025 tons over the same period, even as imports continued to climb to 33 026 tons. In 2024, the impending EU regulation prohibiting coffee imports linked to deforestation increased compliance costs and constrained raw material supply, contributing to the decline in production. Concurrently, consumer preference for convenient, sustainable coffee extracts supported import growth, partially offsetting domestic output reductions.

Spain's exports of coffee extracts, concentrates, and preparations have grown for the third year in a row. In 2019, exports reached 46 800 tonnes, followed by a modest 9.5% increase to 51 260 tonnes in 2020. Over the four-year period from 2017 to 2020, exports surged by 54.9%, translating to an average annual growth rate of 15.7%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Spain's exports of coffee extracts, concentrates, and preparations in volume terms were widely distributed across many countries. The top three destinations—the United Kingdom (19.0% of volume exports), Greece (11.0%), and France (9.3%)—collectively accounted for only 39.2% of total export flows, highlighting a diverse market spread.

Over the 2017-2020 period, exports grew by 31.6%, with a compound annual growth rate of 9.6%. The largest year-on-year increase occurred in 2018 at 20.4%, while 2019 saw a slight decline of 0.8%.

After two years of growth, Spain's imports of coffee extracts, concentrates, and preparations in volume terms declined. In 2019, imports peaked at 18 124 tonnes, then fell by 26.6% to 13 302 tonnes in 2020. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports overall increased by 36.6%, with an average annual growth rate of 11.0%. The largest year-on-year increase was in 2018 at 50.2%.

Between 2017 and 2020, France (17.0% of volume imports), Italy (13.1%), and Switzerland (12.6%) were among the leading suppliers of coffee extracts, concentrates, and preparations to Spain. However, even combined, these three countries represented only 42.7% of total import volume, underscoring a highly diversified sourcing strategy.

The largest year-on-year increase was recorded in 2018 at 11.4%.
