Between 2018 and 2023, the Burundian market for fresh, chilled, or frozen chicken meat and offal experienced notable shifts in volume. After a moderate increase to 9 575 t in 2019, the market expanded sharply to 13 988 t in 2020. A steep contraction followed in 2021, bringing the volume down to 8 578 t.

Market recovery began in 2022, with volume rising to 9 079 t, and continued to 9 510 t in 2023. This rebound was supported by a ban on the movement and slaughter of cattle, goats, and sheep due to a Rift Valley fever outbreak, which boosted demand for chicken as an alternative protein. In 2023, further support came from government funding to intensify the livestock sector, including poultry, and tenders for poultry feed ingredients that strengthened the supply chain.
