Earlier Report Observations
Production of non-rendered pig fat in Burundi started at 910 tons in 2018 and rose to 975 tons the following year. Output then experienced a minor contraction, falling to 943 tons in 2020.
The market entered a phase of rapid expansion from 2021 onward, with production jumping to 1 325 tons that year and reaching 1 616 tons by 2023. This growth period aligned with the government's launch of a livestock intensification program for 2024-2025, which includes funding for pig feed ingredients to bolster local pig farming and support the supply of pig fat.
The government's continued livestock sector support program into 2024 aims to address industry challenges such as limited processing capacity and weak food safety controls that have historically constrained pig farming in Burundi.
