Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2019, the beef and buffalo meat market in Burundi increased from 14 213 t to 15 499 t. This growth was supported by the October 2018 law on permanent stabling and the ban on free-grazing, which improved animal health and productivity, alongside the implementation of the 2018-2027 National Development Plan aimed at modernizing livestock farming.

In 2020, the market volume dropped sharply to 10 953 t due to an outbreak of bovine fever, which led to a temporary ban on cattle slaughter, severely disrupting local supply. Following the lifting of sanitary restrictions, production rebounded strongly in 2021, reaching 16 735 t.

Market volumes stabilized around 16 600-16 700 t in 2022 and 2023. The gradual resumption of slaughter activities and continued government funding for beef value chain development under animal production intensification programs maintained output. In 2023, public tenders for concentrated cattle feed ingredients were launched to further support productivity.
