Earlier Report Observations
In 2018, production of pig fat in Burundi stood at 910 tons, rising to 975 tons in 2019. This growth coincided with the establishment of the Ministry of Environment, Agriculture and Livestock, which implemented a policy to increase animal productivity, including in the pig sector. Strengthened veterinary regulations in 2019 also supported animal health. However, production fell to 943 tons in 2020 due to outbreaks of African swine fever, a priority animal disease that directly reduced pig herds and sales.
Output surged by 40% in 2021 to 1 325 tons. This sharp increase was driven by the government's announced efforts to elevate pig farming as a national priority, including plans for subsidies and encouraging a shift from cattle and goat farming to pigs because of their higher yield under local conditions. Growth continued to 1 512 tons in 2022 and reached 1 616 tons in 2023, supported by state funding for a livestock intensification program for 2024-2025 and the development of agropoles in Karusi and Cibitoke with pig farming as a focus.
For 2024, the government maintained its support through the ongoing intensification program, which included tenders for the supply of ingredients to produce concentrated feed for pigs.
