Pork production in Burundi began to rise in 2018, reaching 9 753 t in 2019. This initial growth was supported by the adoption of a law on permanent stabling and penalties for free-grazing animals, which formalized pig farming practices. The following year, the government launched an intensive livestock farming program, including the pork sector, with funding for feed concentrates. However, production saw a modest decline to 9 435 t in 2020.

A sharp expansion occurred from 2021 onward, with production jumping to 13 251 t that year. This surge was directly driven by the ratification of the PADCAE-B project law, which provided subsidies for feed concentrates to pork producers. In 2022, an outbreak of Rift Valley fever led to movement bans on other livestock, increasing demand and prices for pork. Coupled with a state tender for 100 t of pig feed concentrates in several provinces, this helped push production to 15 121 t. Growth continued in 2023, reaching 16 164 t, underpinned by another state-funded tender for feed ingredients and the ongoing implementation of the livestock intensification project.

Overall, pork production grew by 78% between 2018 and 2023, largely due to sustained state support for feed inputs. In 2024, new developments included the launch of a capital market regulator, amendments to the electricity sector law affecting cold chain infrastructure, and a national agropole program explicitly targeting the pork value chain for intensification.

After two consecutive years of growth, pork production in Burundi experienced a decline. In 2020, the country produced 9 435 tons of pork, representing a 3.3% decrease compared to 2019. The highest production level was recorded in 2019 at 9 753 tons, which also saw the largest annual increase of 7.2%.
