Between 2018 and 2021, Tanzania's cereal germ market volume increased from 118.3 thousand tons to 147.7 thousand tons. The early growth coincided with a documented shift in consumer preferences toward wheat instead of traditional staples like coarse cereals and tubers, which stimulated higher wheat processing and, consequently, germ output. By 2021, government initiatives aimed at improving cereal yields and the mandatory fortification of large-scale wheat and maize flour mills further supported the production of grain-based products, including cereal germ.

Market expansion continued through 2022 and 2023, reaching 182.5 thousand tons in 2023. Direct state involvement through the National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA), which purchased 55 000 metric tons of cereal crops, helped stabilize supply. Simultaneously, government strategies to boost wheat production in key districts and rising urbanization—which increased demand for cereals in food and animal feed—drove processing volumes higher. Ongoing plans to expand grain storage capacity and maintain fortification policies in 2024 underscore the sustained institutional support for the sector.

Tanzania's cereal germ production grew for the second year in a row in 2020, reaching 139.9 thousand tonnes. This marked an 11.0% increase compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production rose by 13.7%, with an average annual growth rate of 4.4%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 118.3 thousand tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 3.8%.
