The barley market in Tanzania contracted substantially between 2018 and 2023, with total market volume falling from 19 558 t to 5 741 t. This represents a decline of over 70% across the five-year period.

The sharp and sustained drop in domestic production, which decreased from 19 501 t to 3 787 t, was the primary driver of the shrinking market size. While imports showed volatility and peaked at 1 977 t in 2023, they were insufficient to offset the collapse in local output. Export flows, notably in 2019 and 2021, also reduced domestic availability in those years.

Tanzania's barley production experienced a two-year growth period before declining. In 2019, production reached its peak at 20 019 tons. However, in 2020, output fell to 17 556 tons, marking a significant 12.3% decrease from the previous year. The most substantial annual increase occurred in 2018, when production rose by 13.0%.
