Colombia's cereal germ market volume expanded from 118.4 thousand tons in 2018 to 142.6 thousand tons in 2020. The growth accelerated in 2021 and 2022, reaching 170.6 thousand tons, primarily due to increased wheat and corn cultivation areas. High international grain prices and a depreciated Colombian peso made local production more competitive, prompting farmers to sell more to private millers and large animal feed companies to expand their own crop cultivation.

The introduction of front-of-pack nutritional labeling rules (Resolutions 810 of 2021 and 2492 of 2022) shifted consumer preferences toward healthier products like cereal germ. At the same time, new players such as Nestlé entered the market with cereal bars and granolas, stimulating demand. By 2023, production reached 173.9 thousand tons, though the pace of growth moderated as structural challenges, including high production costs and adverse weather, affected local grain output.
