Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2021, the cereal germ market volume in Namibia fluctuated, reaching 11 649 t in 2019 before declining to 10 860 t in 2021. This period saw rainfall deficits that reduced cereal harvests, while stringent biosafety regulations for genetically modified organisms, including a 0.9% labeling threshold, governed food and feed imports and production.

The market entered a strong expansion phase from 2022 onward, with volume jumping to 13 641 t that year and climbing to 16 278 t in 2023. This surge aligned with the Namibian Agronomic Board's launch of a N$250 million five-year investment plan targeting 60% grain self-sufficiency, which stimulated domestic cereal processing and germ output.

Additionally, the June 2024 opening of the new broiler producer Kadila Poultry Farming created additional demand for feed ingredients such as cereal germ. Despite persistent drought conditions that elevated cereal import needs, the focus on developing local value chains supported continued growth in domestic cereal germ production.
