The cereal germ market in ASEAN experienced considerable volatility in volume from 2018 to 2023. It began the period at 1 176 thousand tons in 2018 and grew substantially the following year, reaching a peak of 1 300 thousand tons in 2019.

A sharp contraction followed in 2020, with the market volume declining by roughly a third to 862 thousand tons. After this drop, the market continued to gradually shrink for two more years, falling to 818 thousand tons in 2021 and then 791 thousand tons in 2022, before posting a slight recovery to 819 thousand tons in 2023.

ASEAN's cereal germ production declined after two years of growth. In 2019, production reached its peak at 1 305 K t, marking a 10.5% increase. However, by 2020, production fell sharply to 874 K t, representing a 33.0% decrease compared to 2019. Overall, from 2017 to 2020, production decreased by 23.5%, which translates to an annualized decline rate of 8.5%.

Exports cereal germ from ASEAN

The market showed an unstable trend over the period. In 2019, exports hit their lowest point at 5 340 t, with the largest decline of 39.9% recorded in 2018. By 2020, exports surged to 12 579 t, a 135.6% increase from the previous year, reaching the maximum value. This resulted in a 2.4-fold variation between the minimum in 2019 and the peak in 2020.

From 2017 to 2020, Turkey and South Korea dominated ASEAN's cereal germ exports, together accounting for 86.1% of the total volume. Other countries contributed to a more diversified but less significant portion of the exports.

Exports in value, K $ US

ASEAN's cross-border shipments of cereal germ increased for the second consecutive year. In 2018, exports reached their minimum at 3 348 K $ US, with the largest decline of 31.7% recorded that year. By 2020, exports rose to 4 991 K $ US, a 27.9% advance compared to 2019.

Throughout 2017–2020, Turkey, South Korea, and Hong Kong were the key partners in ASEAN's cereal germ exports by value. Turkey accounted for 34.0%, South Korea for 21.8%, and Hong Kong for 5.5% of total exports, together making up 61.3% of the total flows.

Imports cereal germ to ASEAN

ASEAN's volume of cereal germ imports declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports were recorded at 117 t, down by 34.6% compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 83.5%, equating to an annualized decline rate of 45.1%.

Over 2017–2020, the geographical structure of ASEAN's cereal germ imports in kind was highly diversified. China accounted for 24.8%, Asia (not elsewhere specified) for 12.9%, and India for 9.7% of imports, together representing 47.4% of total flows. The remaining 52.6% was distributed among numerous smaller partner countries.

ASEAN imported approximately 418 K $ US of cereal germ in 2020, which is 41.7% less than the previous year. In 2019, the largest increase of 15.4% was recorded. Overall, from 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 60.4%, translating to an annualized decline rate of 26.5%.

In 2017–2020, China, Asia (not elsewhere specified), and the United States were the main sources in the geographical breakdown of ASEAN's cereal germ imports by value. China accounted for 23.5%, Asia (not elsewhere specified) for 22.8%, and the United States for 4.7% of imports, with a combined share of 51.0% of total flows.
