Cassava production in Sub-Saharan Africa increased from 196.9 million tonnes in 2018 to 219.9 million tonnes in 2023, despite a temporary dip to 190.9 million tonnes in 2019. The subsequent recovery and steady expansion were primarily driven by a heightened focus on local food security during the COVID-19 pandemic, which encouraged resilient cassava cultivation, and by increased investment in mechanization and modernization of processing units to boost productivity.

The market's growth accelerated from 2021 onward, supported by the launch of large public-private processing plant projects and the entry of new industrial players, including international agri-food companies. Stricter quality, traceability, and labeling regulations facilitated market access, while evolving consumer preferences toward more processed, ready-to-eat, and gluten-free cassava products stimulated diversification and added value.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, cassava production reached 195.8 million tonnes in 2020, marking a 2.6% increase compared to the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 9.7%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 3.1%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 196.9 million tonnes, with that year also seeing the largest increase of 10.3%. In contrast, 2019 experienced the most significant decline, with production falling by 3.1%.

Exports cassava from Sub-Saharan Africa

Cross-border shipments of cassava from Sub-Saharan Africa have increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports totaled 11 406 tonnes, up by 3.2% from 2019. Over the four-year period from 2017 to 2020, exports surged by 169.2%, representing a compound annual growth rate of 39.1%.

The export market for cassava in kind from Sub-Saharan Africa was highly diversified between 2017 and 2020. France accounted for 4.8% of exports in kind, Turkey for 2.3%, and Belgium for 1.5%, with these three countries together making up just 8.7% of total flows. The remaining 91.3% was distributed among numerous other countries.

Exports in value, K $ US

In 2020, cassava exports from Sub-Saharan Africa in value terms amounted to 7 407 thousand US dollars, showing a sharp increase of 30.5% compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, exports grew by 32.1%, with an average annual growth rate of 9.7%. The largest decline occurred in 2019, when exports fell by 4.0%.

Between 2017 and 2020, cassava exports in value terms from Sub-Saharan Africa were spread across a wide range of markets. France represented 4.0% of exports in value terms, the Netherlands 2.1%, and Canada 1.7%, with these three countries collectively accounting for only 7.9% of total flows.

After two years of growth, cassava imports into Sub-Saharan Africa declined in 2020. Imports stood at 18 940 tonnes, a modest decrease of 3.2% from 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports increased by 54.6%, equating to an average annual growth rate of 15.6%. The peak import volume was recorded in 2019 at 19 556 tonnes, while the largest increase of 47.5% occurred in 2018.

From 2017 to 2020, imports grew by 37%, with an average annual growth rate of 11.1%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 19 128 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 37.4%. In contrast, 2019 experienced the most significant decline, with imports dropping by 2.3%.
