Cassava production in French Polynesia experienced a gradual decline from 3 819 t in 2018 to 3 678 t in 2023. This downward trend was primarily driven by a structural contraction in the agricultural sector, highlighted by a 46% reduction in the number of staple crop farmers over the past eleven years, which directly constrained local output capacity.

In response to this decline, the local government launched the TAVIVAT project in 2022, backed by initial funding of 35.8 million francs, aimed at revitalizing cassava production through school meal programs and agro-ecological practices. The initiative's funding was significantly increased to 110.1 million francs in 2023 to strengthen incentives and develop processing channels. However, these support measures had not yet reversed the overall production slide by the end of the period, as the market also faced ongoing pressure from a 22% decrease in the total number of farms since 2012.
