The market for fresh cauliflowers and broccoli in Sub-Saharan Africa showed considerable variation in volume between 2018 and 2023. This growth period was followed by a sharp contraction to 14 691 т in 2023, aligning with a concurrent decline in domestic production levels over the six-year span.

Recent market conditions have been shaped by notable price movements and trade patterns. In South Africa, a significant rise in fresh broccoli export prices during 2023 indicated robust external demand, while domestic wholesale prices experienced ongoing volatility. Conversely, Nigeria's average export prices for these vegetables fell in 2024. These price dynamics occurred against a backdrop of global supply chain disruptions, which influenced trade flows and pricing across the region.

Following a two-year decline, Sub-Saharan Africa's production of cauliflowers and broccoli rebounded. In 2020, the region produced 15 454 tonnes, marking a modest 1.0% increase from the previous year. However, looking at the broader period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 24.4%, which translates to an average annual decrease of 8.9%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 15 297 tonnes, with that year also seeing the steepest decline of 17.1%.

In 2020, Sub-Saharan Africa exported 1 095 tonnes of cauliflowers and broccoli, a significant drop of 26.8% compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports declined by 55%, averaging an annual decrease of 23.4%. The largest decline occurred in 2018, with a 44.9% drop, while 2019 saw a recovery with an 11.6% increase.

From 2017 to 2020, the United Kingdom, Belarus, and the Netherlands were the primary buyers of cauliflowers and broccoli from Sub-Saharan Africa. The United Kingdom accounted for 16.7% of exports in volume, Belarus for 12.2%, and the Netherlands for 3.6%. Together, these three countries made up 32.6% of total exports in kind.

Between 2017 and 2020, export value fell by 22.5%, with an average annual decline of 8.2%. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 8 132 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 28.1%.

Sub-Saharan Africa's imports of cauliflowers and broccoli increased for the second year in a row. In 2020, the region imported 3 410 tonnes, up by 16.8% from 2019. From 2017 to 2020, imports grew by 40.2%, averaging an annual increase of 11.9%. The lowest import volume was in 2018 at 1 893 tonnes, which also experienced the largest decline of 22.1%. In contrast, 2019 saw the biggest increase of 54.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, the import structure for cauliflowers and broccoli in Sub-Saharan Africa was relatively balanced, with no single country dominating. Morocco accounted for 9.3% of imports in volume, Egypt for 4.0%, and Belgium for 3.9%. Together, these three countries represented 17.2% of total imports, while many other countries made up the remaining 82.8%.

The peak value was recorded in 2018 at 4 008 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 10.3%.

Throughout 2017–2020, the import value of cauliflowers and broccoli to Sub-Saharan Africa was not concentrated among a few key markets. Egypt accounted for 6.1% of imports in value, Belgium for 5.7%, and France for 4.2%. Together, these three countries represented only 16.1% of total import flows.
