The market volume peaked at over 12,180 thousand tonnes in 2022, supported by a surge in imports to 7,110 thousand tonnes that year. This followed a period of recovery from a low of 7,889 thousand tonnes in 2019.

By 2023, the market volume had contracted to 10,688 thousand tonnes as imports fell back to 5,608 thousand tonnes. In 2024, cassava chip imports fell sharply to 2,472 thousand tonnes, a trend linked to significant changes in supply from major sources like Thailand and Vietnam and a stabilization of domestic demand.

Cassava production in China grew for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 5 112 K t of cassava, marking a slight increase of 1.2% compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, production rose by 3.3%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 1.1%.

Following a two-year decline, China's cassava imports rebounded. In 2020, imports amounted to 3 355 K t, showing a significant year-on-year improvement of 18.2%. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports fell by 58.7%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -25.5%. The lowest volume was recorded in 2019 at 2 838 K t, while the largest decline occurred in 2018 with a drop of 41.0%.

After a two-year decrease, China's cassava imports in value terms saw an upturn. In 2020, import volume totaled 783 M US dollars, which is 22.0% higher than the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 46%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -18.6%. The minimum value was recorded in 2019 at 642 M US dollars, and the largest decline also occurred in 2019 with a drop of 43.3%.
