A strong recovery began in 2020, with volume rising to 129.5 thousand tons. Following a slight stabilization in 2021, growth accelerated, reaching 156.3 thousand tons in 2022 and surging to 210.2 thousand tons by 2023.

From 2017 to 2020, Ukraine ranked third globally in buckwheat production volume.

Following a two-year decline, buckwheat production in Ukraine rebounded in 2020, reaching 97.6 K t. This marked a 14.8% increase compared to 2019. However, over the entire 2017-2020 period, production fell by 45.9%, averaging an annual decline of 18.5%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 85.0 K t, which saw the steepest drop of 37.9% that year.

Exports buckwheat to Ukraine

Exports in kind, t

After two consecutive years of growth, buckwheat exports from Ukraine dropped in 2020 to 405 t, a sharp decrease of 66.5% from the previous year. Overall, from 2017 to 2020, exports declined by 20.8%, with an average annual reduction of 7.5%. The peak export volume occurred in 2019 at 1 209 t, which also experienced the largest annual increase of 65.0%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Poland, Germany, and Hungary were the primary markets for Ukraine's buckwheat exports in volume terms. Poland accounted for 41.6% of exports, Germany for 17.7%, and Hungary for 16.8%, together making up 76.1% of total export flows.

Exports in value, K $ US

Following two years of growth, the value of buckwheat exports from Ukraine fell in 2020 to 268 K $ US, a decline of 43.5% compared to the prior year. Over the 2017-2020 period, export values decreased by 8.5%, with an average annual drop of 2.9%. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 474 K $ US, while the largest annual increase occurred in 2018 at 33.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, Poland, Hungary, and Germany were the leading destinations for Ukraine's buckwheat exports in value terms. Poland represented 37.6% of export value, Hungary 18.5%, and Germany 17.5%, collectively accounting for 73.6% of total export flows.

Imports buckwheat in Ukraine

Imports in kind, t

The import data shows significant volatility, reflecting an unstable market environment. Imports reached their lowest point in 2018 at 11 527 t and peaked in 2020 at 32 225 t, representing a 2.8-fold difference between these years. In 2020, imports surged by 124.3% compared to 2019. The largest annual decline was recorded in 2018 at 27.4%.

During the 2017-2020 period, Russia and Kazakhstan dominated Ukraine's buckwheat imports in volume terms, while other markets played minor individual roles.

Market behavior was highly volatile during these years. Import values hit a low in 2018 at 2 308 K $ US and peaked in 2020 at 14 490 K $ US, showing a 6.3-fold swing. In 2020, import values jumped by 223.3% compared to 2019. The steepest annual decline occurred in 2018 at 51.7%.
