The market volume for broken rice in Ukraine fluctuated between 2018 and 2021, starting at 41 297 t before falling to 28 359 t. This downward path was interrupted only by a temporary recovery in 2020.

A significant external shock hit the market in 2022 when India banned broken rice exports to reserve supply for its domestic poultry and ethanol industries. This restriction tightened global availability and contributed to Ukraine's market volume contracting further to 25 571 t. Persistent global pressures, including high input costs and complex logistics, continued to constrain supply in 2023, driving the market volume down to 23 619 t.

Ukraine produced 29,128 tonnes of broken rice in 2020, marking a 32.1% increase compared to the previous year. Production reached its lowest point in 2019 at 22,046 tonnes, while the peak was recorded in 2018 at 30,256 tonnes. The most significant decline occurred in 2019 with a 27.1% drop, whereas the largest increase was in 2018 at 35.0%. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 30%, translating to an annualized growth rate of 9.1%.

Ukraine exported 40 tonnes of broken rice in 2020, representing a sharp 33.0% year-over-year decrease. From 2017 to 2020, exports fell by 85.4%, which corresponds to an annualized decline of 47.4%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Romania dominated Ukraine's broken rice export flows, accounting for 73.4% of the total volume. Other markets played a relatively minor role during this period.

From 2017 to 2020, Romania and Moldova were the key partners for Ukraine's broken rice exports in value terms, with shares of 69.3% and 27.4%, respectively. Together, they accounted for 96.7% of total export value, while other partners made up the remainder.

Ukraine's broken rice imports declined for the second consecutive year in 2020, reaching approximately 7,371 tonnes, a 23.1% decrease year-over-year. The peak import volume was recorded in 2018 at 11,041 tonnes, with the largest increase that year at 11.3%. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports fell by 25.7%, corresponding to an annualized decline of 9.4%.

During 2017-2020, Kazakhstan was the primary source for Ukraine's broken rice imports, consistently holding a 72.1% share of the total volume. This indicates a high concentration on the Kazakh market, with other countries accounting for the rest.

Ukraine's broken rice import value declined for the second year in a row in 2020, totaling 2,233,000 US dollars, down 22.3% from the previous year. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 3,046,000 US dollars, with the largest increase that year at 65.8%. Between 2017 and 2020, import value increased by 21.5%, equating to an annualized growth rate of 6.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Pakistan were the main suppliers of broken rice to Ukraine in value terms, with shares of 65.5%, 13.8%, and 10.4%, respectively. Together, these three countries accounted for 89.7% of total import value.
