Earlier Report Observations

The broken rice market in SADC showed considerable volatility from 2018 to 2023, with annual market volume fluctuating between 525 thousand tonnes and 799 thousand tonnes. A sharp decline in 2019 was followed by a strong recovery, leading to a peak in 2022 before another contraction in 2023.

A notable development was the rise in informal cross-border trade, with informal remittances within SADC estimated at ZAR 11 billion in 2021. This growth in unofficial trade flows affected market dynamics and distribution channels for broken rice throughout the period.
