The broken rice market in the Americas measured 4.2 million tons in 2018 before contracting to 3.6 million tons in 2019. It then recovered modestly to 3.7 million tons in 2020 and 3.9 million tons in 2021. In value terms, the market followed a volatile path, falling to $1.2 billion in 2019 and then rising to $1.7 billion by 2021.

Market volume declined to 3.8 million tons in 2022, yet its value rose to $1.7 billion. This shift was driven by India's export ban on broken rice and non-basmati white rice from September 2022, which severely tightened global supply. Concurrently, adverse weather in key producing nations like China and India pushed world rice prices higher, increasing costs for importers in the region.

In 2023, the market volume fell further to 3.5 million tons, with value dropping to $1.5 billion. India's export restrictions remained, keeping global prices elevated by around 30% and constraining affordable supply. Continued climatic pressures on worldwide production sustained the tight market conditions, contributing to the decline in both volume and value.

From 2017 to 2020, production grew by 17.6%, which translates to an annualized rate of 5.5%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 4 263 K t. In 2019, production saw its largest decline of 11.0%, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 with a 23.8% rise.

In 2020, the output of broken rice in the Americas was valued at 1 386 M $ US, reflecting a substantial 18.8% increase from the prior year. After two years of growth, broken rice export volumes from the Americas declined. In 2020, exports were recorded at 708.4 K t, indicating a 2.4% decrease year-over-year. From 2017 to 2020, exports increased by 40.4%, which corresponds to an annualized rate of 12.0%. The peak export volume was reached in 2019 at 725.7 K t, with the largest increase occurring in 2018 at 29.9%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Gambia were the principal buyers of broken rice from the Americas, accounting for 27.5%, 19.4%, and 15.1% of exports in kind, respectively. Together, these three countries represented 61.9% of total exports in kind during this period.

Broken rice exports from the Americas increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the Americas exported 242.6 M $ US of broken rice, marking an 8.7% rise compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports grew by 50.2%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14.5%.

Broken rice import volume into the Americas declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports amounted to 221.9 M $ US, corresponding to a significant 11.1% drop year-over-year. From 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 20.5%, equating to an annualized decline of 7.4%. The highest import value was recorded in 2018 at 329.5 M $ US. In 2019, imports saw their largest decline of 24.2%, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 with an 18.1% rise.
