Earlier Report Observations

After reaching 1.3 million tons in 2018, the Brazilian broken rice market volume contracted sharply to 847 thousand tons in 2019 and remained at that level in 2020. This initial decline was primarily due to a reduction in planted area as farmers switched to more profitable crops like soybeans, coupled with weakened domestic consumption. The market stabilized in 2020 despite pandemic-related supply chain disruptions and high logistics costs, as producers withheld supply to support prices.

Market volume recovered to 1.1 million tons in 2021, aided by the adoption of genetic, chemical, and mechanical technologies that boosted productivity despite high production costs and irregular rains from La Niña. However, the trend reversed from 2022 onward, with volume falling to 831 thousand tons in 2022 and 783 thousand tons in 2023. This was driven by continued area reduction, especially in Rio Grande do Sul, due to environmental restrictions and competition with other crops, along with a stagnant market characterized by low liquidity and buyer hesitation. Adverse climate conditions further pressured yields, leading to the smallest harvest in two decades by 2023.
