The Mexican broken rice market entered a period of strong expansion from 2018 to 2022, with production rising from 154.3 thousand tons to 340.0 thousand tons. This growth accelerated notably in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic began disrupting international supply chains and import flows, leading domestic producers to increase output sharply to meet local demand.

The upward trend continued through 2022, supported by rising international rice prices and growing consumer demand for specialty long-grain varieties, which improved the profitability of local cultivation. However, production contracted to 290.0 thousand tons in 2023, a decline influenced by adverse weather conditions and global market pressures, including India's ban on non-basmati white rice exports from mid-2023, which tightened worldwide supply.
