Between 2018 and 2020, the Spanish broken rice market saw fluctuations. In 2019, adverse weather conditions and droughts reduced domestic production, shrinking the market volume. The market rebounded in 2020 after the introduction of a safeguard clause on imports from Myanmar and Cambodia, which supported local producers, and as Mars Incorporated initiated a project to improve rice cultivation practices, contributing to higher output.

From 2021 to 2023, the market expanded strongly. Growing consumer demand for specialty rice varieties such as basmati and kits drove consumption, while Spain's CAP Strategic Plan, approved in 2022, provided subsidies for sustainable rice production, boosting domestic supply. This period also saw increased production of these specialty segments, further accelerating market growth.

In 2024, the market volume dropped sharply due to extreme weather variability, including alternating droughts and floods, which severely curtailed the harvest. Persistent challenges from phytosanitary restrictions and international competition continued to pressure the sector.
