The Brazilian semi-milled or wholly milled rice market experienced notable volume shifts between 2018 and 2023. A decline to 6.6 million tons in 2019 resulted from competition with more lucrative soybean crops, which reduced planting area, and environmental constraints that limited expansion. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 heightened external demand and elevated prices, supporting a recovery to 6.9 million tons.

Climatic events further shaped production in subsequent years. Severe drought in Rio Grande do Sul during 2021 challenged yields, yet market volume grew to 7.4 million tons. In 2022, the La Niña weather pattern and continued soybean profitability caused planting area to contract again, lowering volume to 7.3 million tons. By 2023, volume reached 7.5 million tons, aided by increased imports despite intense price and liquidity pressures on the domestic market.

Product innovation emerged alongside these volume movements, with Ruzene launching mini integral rices, including black rice, in 2022. This expansion into differentiated varieties catered to evolving consumer segments within the broader market.

Brazil's production of semi-milled or wholly milled rice grew for the second year in a row. In 2021, the country produced 7,321 thousand tons, marking a 7.3% increase compared to 2020. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 6,556 thousand tons, which also saw the largest decline of 9.9%.

In 2021, the output was valued at 4,346 million US dollars, reflecting a significant 30.6% increase from the previous year. From 2018 to 2021, production grew by 26.7%, averaging an annualized rate of 8.2%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 3,116 million US dollars, which also experienced the largest decline of 9.2%.

Exports semi-milled or wholly milled rice from Brazil

Following two years of growth, Brazil's exports of semi-milled or wholly milled rice declined. In 2021, the country exported 271.0 thousand tons, representing a sharp 44.3% decrease compared to the previous year. From 2018 to 2021, Peru, Venezuela, and Cuba were the primary markets for Brazil's exports of semi-milled or wholly milled rice in volume terms. Peru accounted for 27.3% of exports, Venezuela for 18.9%, and Cuba for 14.5%, together making up 60.7% of total export flows.

After two years of growth, the value of Brazil's exports of semi-milled or wholly milled rice decreased. In 2021, exports amounted to 160.9 million US dollars, a 32.2% drop from the year before. Between 2018 and 2021, exports increased by 3.7%, averaging an annualized rate of 1.2%.
