Earlier Report Observations
The broken rice market in Guinea began the period with a significant reduction in total volume, falling from 159.4 thousand tons in 2018 to 120.9 thousand tons in 2020. This contraction was primarily driven by a sharp drop in imports, which plummeted from 59.4 thousand tons to 16.2 thousand tons over those two years, as inflation and the depreciation of the Guinean franc made imported rice more expensive. During the same time, domestic production saw initial growth supported by the launch of the AgriFARM project and the modernization of the local processing sector through an increase in privately-owned rice hullers.
From 2021, the market entered a recovery phase, with the total volume reaching 139.9 thousand tons by 2023. This expansion was fueled by continued strengthening of domestic production, underpinned by the mid-term review and ongoing actions of the AgriFARM project. By 2023, Guinea had become the second-largest rice producer in West Africa, meeting over 65% of national consumption. Government measures, including tax and customs exemptions on rice and a memorandum with the private sector to guarantee supplies, helped stabilize the market and support consumption growth despite fluctuating import levels.
