Earlier Report Observations

The Thai banana market experienced notable volatility between 2018 and 2023. After steady initial growth, market volume surged to 1.4 million tons in 2020, the peak of the period. However, this was followed by two consecutive years of contraction before a moderate recovery in 2023, bringing the market to 1.33 million tons.

The significant market expansion in 2020 was driven by a government-led push to enhance Thailand's export competitiveness against Vietnam and Cambodia, focusing on quality improvements and marketing of 'Kluai Nam Wa' and 'Kluai Hom' varieties for key export markets like China and Japan. This period also saw the experimental planting of 150,000 banana trees to demonstrate cultivation in suitable areas, supporting increased production. The subsequent market recovery in 2023 stemmed from direct agricultural support, with the Department of Agricultural Extension promoting the cultivation of 'Kluai Hom' using precision management for water, fertilizer, and pest control to boost yields and quality. This was complemented by the promotion of 'Kluai Hom Thong' in new areas and the establishment of community enterprise groups to improve production efficiency.

Concurrently, market dynamics were influenced by trends in niche segments and technological upgrades. The 'Kluai Dang' (variegated banana) variety saw a sharp rise and fall in popularity and price between 2021 and 2022. Alongside this, efforts to improve product value and shelf life progressed, including the development of specialized packaging and the dissemination of solar drying technology to enhance the quality of dried bananas and banana chips.
