The aubergine market in Mauritius began a growth phase in 2018-2019, supported by new agricultural policies. The introduction of the Use of Pesticides Act in 2018 aimed to regulate pesticide use in vegetable production, ensuring healthier aubergines and protecting pollinators. Simultaneously, government encouragement and funding for greenhouse cultivation, promoted by FAREI, helped improve the quality and competitiveness of local produce. These measures laid the groundwork for production to increase from 2 495 t in 2018 to 3 385 t in 2019. The trend continued into 2020 with a slight rise to 3 496 t.

Production faced a setback in 2021, dropping to 3 093 t. This decline was primarily due to local production difficulties, including climate volatility, lack of crop planning, and logistical constraints that led to scarcity and high prices for fresh vegetables. However, in 2022, production stabilized and grew modestly to 3 165 t, buoyed by evolving consumer preferences. Mauritian shoppers showed a growing appetite for fresh, local, and high-quality vegetables, including organic and frozen options, which encouraged producers to adapt their strategies.

The most dramatic change occurred in 2023, when aubergine production surged to 4 860 t, marking a 54% increase from the previous year. This expansion took place amid reports of persistent production challenges and a rising demand for fresh, sustainable produce. The market demonstrated resilience, significantly boosting output to meet consumer needs.

Mauritius saw its aubergine production volume rise for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 3 496 tonnes of aubergines, marking a moderate 3.3% increase compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 12.8%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 4.1%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 2 495 tonnes, when output fell by 19.5%—the largest decline in the period. In contrast, 2019 saw the biggest increase, with production jumping by 35.7%.
