Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the market for fresh or chilled beans in Mauritius showed relative stability, with volume edging down slightly to 1 472 t in 2019 before rising to 1 533 t in 2020. The growth in 2020 was spurred by the COVID‑19 lockdown announced in March, which shifted consumer preferences toward healthier options like legumes, boosting demand for fresh beans.

In 2021, the market expanded further to 1 655 t, supported by a 51% increase in local greenhouse production of food crops as farmers adapted to new realities and rising demand for sustainable local produce. However, 2022 saw a contraction to 1 569 t due to prolonged drought, higher electricity costs, and global inflationary pressures exacerbated by the Russia‑Ukraine war, which raised input prices and squeezed local bean cultivation.

The market rebounded sharply in 2023, reaching 2 629 t—more than double the previous year’s level. This surge was driven by state intervention through the Agricultural Marketing Board (AMB), which imported bean shipments to stabilize supply, alongside continued adaptation of local production that led to a significant output increase.
