Spain's almond market volume showed a marked upward trend between 2018 and 2020, reaching 427.9 thousand tons in 2020. This growth was driven by the continuous expansion of almond plantations and a shift towards more suitable irrigated land with mechanization, which significantly increased domestic production.

Following the peak, the market volume contracted over the next two years, declining to 368.2 thousand tons in 2021 and further to 271.0 thousand tons in 2022.

A recovery occurred in 2023, with market volume rising to 322.2 thousand tons. This rebound was supported by a 32.6% surge in domestic consumption, fueled by European promotional campaigns. The sector also saw the introduction of updated quality standards for almond reception and preparation for new EU mandatory country-of-origin labeling rules.

Spain's almond production grew for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 417.0 thousand tons of almonds, marking a 22.5% increase compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production rose by 63.2%, with an average annual growth rate of 17.7%.

Spain's almond production value also increased for the third year in a row. In 2020, the output was valued at 2 891 million US dollars, reflecting a solid 19.6% gain over 2019. From 2017 to 2020, production value grew by 54.7%, with a compound annual growth rate of 15.7%.

Exports almonds from Spain

After two years of growth, Spain's almond exports declined in 2020, reaching 101.8 thousand tons, which represents a 5.6% decrease year-over-year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports increased by 25.2%, with an average annual growth rate of 7.8%. The highest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 107.8 thousand tons, while the largest annual increase occurred in 2018 at 15.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, Germany, Italy, and France were the main destinations for Spain's almond exports by volume. Germany accounted for 22.2% of exports, Italy for 18.7%, and France for 17.7%, together absorbing 58.6% of total almond exports from Spain.

Following two years of growth, Spain's almond export value declined in 2020, totaling 705.6 million US dollars, a 7.8% drop from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, export value increased by 18.7%, equating to an average annual growth rate of 5.9%. The peak value was recorded in 2019 at 765.6 million US dollars, with the largest annual increase also occurring in 2019 at 14.4%.

Throughout 2017-2020, Germany, Italy, and France formed the key group of partners for Spain's almond exports by value. Germany represented 22.4% of export value, Italy 17.7%, and France 17.1%, jointly accounting for 57.2% of total export flows.

Imports almonds to Spain

Spain's almond imports rose for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the country imported approximately 112.7 thousand tons of almonds, a slight 2.0% increase compared to the prior year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports grew by 3%, with an average annual growth rate of 1.0%. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2018 at 108.4 thousand tons, while the largest annual decline occurred in 2018 at 1.0%.
