Earlier Report Observations

The Spanish in-shell almond market volume rose from 337 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 424 thousand tonnes in 2020. This expansion was primarily driven by increased almond cultivation area, especially in Andalusia and Valencia, which boosted domestic production. Strong international demand from the EU, India, and China further pulled market volume upward, while variable climatic conditions like droughts and frosts in 2019 moderated yield growth.

Market volume then contracted to 372 thousand tonnes in 2021 and 267 thousand tonnes in 2022 before recovering to 310 thousand tonnes in 2023. Climate directly affected price and production evolution in 2021, leading to lower yields. The recovery in 2023 was underpinned by a rise in domestic consumption, fueled by European promotion campaigns co-financed by the EU. Growing consumer preference for organic almonds and increased dedicated cultivation area for organic production also supported market activity, even as droughts and high temperatures impacted rainfed output in regions like Andalusia.
