Volume started at 6.9 million tons in 2018, fell sharply to 5.6 million tons in 2019, then rebounded to 6.7 million tons in 2020. A downward trend followed, with the market declining to 6.0 million tons in 2021, dipping modestly to 5.8 million tons in 2022, and contracting significantly to 4.8 million tons by 2023.

The sharp market contraction in 2023 was largely a consequence of COVID-19 pandemic effects, which disrupted global supply chains for fresh grapes. Increased transportation costs and reduced availability constrained both production and consumption, leading to the pronounced drop in market volume that year.

Regulatory developments formed a consistent backdrop during this period. The launch of the Programa de Apoyo al Sector Vitivinícola Español (PASVE) in 2019 and the implementation of Real Decreto 557/2020, which set maximum yield limits per hectare for wine grapes, represented key policy measures influencing the broader grape production environment in Spain.

The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 6,983 thousand tonnes, marking a 29.6% increase. In contrast, 2019 saw the largest decline of 17.7%.
