Earlier Report Observations

The market for fresh or chilled alliaceous vegetables in Mexico expanded significantly between 2018 and 2023, with volume growing from 1 060 thousand tonnes to 1 548 thousand tonnes. This 46% increase was not steady, however, as the market experienced a notable contraction in 2020 to 1 038 thousand tonnes before entering a phase of accelerated growth. The period from 2021 onward saw particularly strong expansion, with the market adding over 300 thousand tonnes in just two years.

Domestic production played a central role in shaping market supply. After declining from 1 778 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 1 654 thousand tonnes in 2021, output rebounded sharply to reach 2 023 thousand tonnes in 2023. Trade flows also contributed to market dynamics: imports peaked at 137 thousand tonnes in 2020 before falling back, while exports fluctuated between 500 and 800 thousand tonnes, affecting the net volume available for domestic consumption.

By 2023, the Mexican market for alliaceous vegetables had established a clear upward trajectory, with both production and consumption reaching their highest levels in the observed period. The consistent growth after 2020 indicates a strengthening domestic demand and supply capacity.
