Yam production in Togo increased consistently from 858.8 thousand tons in 2018 to 984.6 thousand tons in 2022, with a notable acceleration in 2020 when output grew by 7.6%. This expansion was supported by the introduction of improved, disease-resistant yam varieties by the Togolese Institute of Agronomic Research (ITRA) in 2021, which enhanced yields and crop resilience. Concurrently, the government's Agro-Industrialization Policy (PIA) launched in 2021 stimulated local processing, adding value to the raw produce.

Production stabilized at 973.0 thousand tons in 2023, as the government imposed a temporary ban on exports of yams and yam flour to curb domestic price rises, reflecting pressure on local supply. The same year saw the emergence of new agro-processing ventures like the TOUMOUKAIN cooperative, which began producing high-nutrition yam flour, showcasing product diversification at events such as the International Agriculture and Agribusiness Fair in Lomé.

Throughout the period, yams remained a staple food with strong local and regional demand, underpinned by cultural significance and infrastructure improvements. In 2024, a new modern market opened in Tsévié to facilitate the sale of local produce, including yams, further integrating the supply chain.
