The market volume for sweet potatoes in Togo expanded from 8,551 t in 2018 to 10,273 t in 2023. Early growth was supported by initiatives such as the distribution of high-performing vine cuttings to multipliers and processors starting in 2018, which helped establish more productive plantations. Promotion of orange-fleshed sweet potato as a high-nutrition product within the national food system resilience plan also raised its profile.

Production increases were evident in 2021, with a reported 4% yield rise following the distribution of 1.8 million cuttings of new varieties through the FSRP-Togo program. This contributed to production reaching 9,694 t. In 2022, total tuber production, including sweet potatoes, grew by 2%, reflecting sustained agronomic assistance. However, domestic production fell to 7,767 t in 2023, though market volume was maintained by a significant increase in imports, which began in 2022.

For 2024, mandatory food product marking controls were introduced in November, and the World Bank committed 50 billion CFA francs to the FSRP-Togo program to boost yields, mechanization, and input access. The creation of over 14,000 new businesses in Togo signaled a dynamic environment for potential new entrants in the sweet potato value chain.

Sweet potato production in Togo has grown for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 9 303 tonnes of sweet potatoes, marking a 7.3% increase from the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, overall production rose by 6.5%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 2.1%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 8 551 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 2.1% during this timeframe.
