Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the tomato market in Togo faced consistent local production shortfalls, leading to seasonal scarcity and high prices. The establishment of a new private processor, Tanko Timati, represented an effort to add value and stabilize supply. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 severely disrupted transport and reduced agricultural revenues, worsening post-harvest losses and contributing to a contraction in imports and overall market volume.

Market volume recovered sharply in 2021 with a surge in imports, before declining again in 2022. This contraction coincided with logistical disruptions from the postponed relocation of the main Lomé wholesale market, which affected distribution. By 2023, the market volume had partially rebounded, indicating continued supply volatility.

In 2024, direct government purchases of over 200 tons from local producers provided immediate support, while the launch of the modern Be-Klikame wholesale market aimed to improve sales infrastructure. New national agro-food standards, including for tomatoes, were also validated to strengthen quality and traceability requirements.
