The market for wood in the rough in Mali showed consistent, moderate growth from 2018 to 2021, with volume expanding from 4 290 thousand tonnes to 4 449 thousand tonnes. This upward trend was interrupted in 2022 when the market contracted by over 5% to 4 221 thousand tonnes. The decline coincided with a regional trade embargo imposed by ECOWAS and UEMOA from January to July 2022, which restricted Mali's access to key supply ports and likely disrupted forestry logistics and related economic activity. Furthermore, a global surge in agricultural input prices, linked to the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict, increased operational costs for industries, indirectly pressuring the wood sector.

Market volume partially recovered in 2023, rising by 1.8% to 4 298 thousand tonnes, a level still below the 2021 peak. This rebound followed the lifting of the regional embargo in mid-2022, allowing for a gradual normalization of trade flows. Over the full period from 2018 to 2023, the market demonstrated resilience, ending with a volume slightly higher than at the start, despite the significant mid-period shock.
