Earlier Report Observations

The market for wood in the rough in Guatemala expanded from 13.98 million tonnes in 2018 to 16.92 million tonnes in 2023. The most significant growth occurred in 2022, when market volume increased by 9.5% to nearly 16.79 million tonnes. This jump was supported by the National Forest Institute (INAB) authorizing an average of 5.5 million cubic meters of wood for extraction that year, alongside the entry of new establishments dedicated to wood packaging treatment, which helped formalize and boost domestic supply.

Earlier growth in 2021, when the market rose by 4.7% to 15.34 million tonnes, coincided with INAB's promotion of sustainable forest management practices aimed at reducing deforestation and encouraging reforestation, helping to secure timber supply. After the strong 2022 expansion, the market essentially stabilized in 2023, increasing by less than 1% to 16.92 million tonnes.
