Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the Australian wine market's value remained relatively stable, fluctuating between USD 2 075 million and USD 2 133 million, with a modest increase in 2020. This period was marked by increasing global competition and declining demand for commercial wine segments where Australia was heavily exposed. Concurrently, a premiumisation trend gained momentum, helping to sustain market value even as volumes contracted. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 temporarily boosted wine consumption due to shifts in consumer behavior, while accelerated e-commerce adoption and strengthening premiumisation contributed to the slight market value growth.

Market value surged by 64% to USD 3 450 million in 2021, primarily driven by punitive Chinese tariffs on Australian wine exports. These tariffs led to significant stock surpluses domestically as exports fell sharply. Growth in no- and low-alcohol wine segments and ongoing premiumisation further supported the value increase. However, the market subsequently contracted, falling to USD 3 242 million in 2022 and USD 2 110 million in 2023. This decline was fueled by a structural 9% drop in Australian wine consumption from 2020 to 2022, alongside supply chain disruptions, inflation, and growing competition from the ready-to-drink (RTD) category, which shifted consumer spending.

By 2024-2025, the industry faced a crisis characterized by chronic oversupply, particularly of red wine, and unsustainably low prices. The reopening of the Chinese market offered limited relief due to large accumulated inventories. Moderation trends, including the 'sober curious' movement and the impact of weight-loss drugs, continued to negatively affect consumption. In contrast, no- and low-alcohol wine segments showed strong growth, and consumer preferences shifted persistently toward lighter, more refreshing styles such as Pinot Noir and Rosé. Major companies like Treasury Wine Estates reported falling sales and excess stock, reflecting these broader industry challenges.
