Earlier Report Observations

In 2018, the wine and wine products market in Argentina reached 1 182 thousand tonnes. Production was highly concentrated in Mendoza province, accounting for about 77% of national output, with non-varietal red wine being the most produced type. By 2019, market volume fell to 1 001 thousand tonnes, while enotourism gained traction and boutique wineries like La Azul, Maal Wines and Super Uco received recognition. In 2020, the market volume further declined to 696 thousand tonnes.

The market recovered in 2021, growing to 973 thousand tonnes. This rebound was driven by a historic export performance, with bottled wine exports reaching USD 822 million, which stimulated production. However, domestic consumption continued to decline, dropping by 11.1%.

From 2022 to 2023, the market volume contracted again, falling to 893 thousand tonnes in 2022 and 696 thousand tonnes in 2023. A water crisis in Mendoza impacted grape yields and production, while macroeconomic instability eroded purchasing power. The government implemented financial incentives, including the 'Malbec dollar' in 2023 to boost exports, but this did not prevent a 36.2% drop in domestic consumption in 2023. By 2024, grape production began to recover and exports grew by 15.3%, yet wine consumption in Argentina kept falling due to cultural shifts and competition from other beverages.
