The market volume for wheat bran and residues in Zambia rose from 18 854 t in 2018 to 30 261 t in 2020. Performance studies on spring wheat varieties conducted during this period enhanced wheat yields and processing output, which increased the supply of milling by-products.

After contracting to 22 450 t in 2021, the market saw modest growth to 22 910 t in 2022. It then surged to 35 817 t in 2023, driven by the Zambia Agricultural Research Institute's support for wheat production and the planning of the Comprehensive Agriculture Transformation Support Programme (CATSP), which aimed to boost wheat output and reduce post-harvest losses.

Zambia's production of wheat bran, sharps, and residues increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, Zambia produced 33 668 tonnes, marking a 40.9% rise compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production overall decreased by 6.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of 2.2%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 23 206 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 35.6%.

Zambia's exports of wheat bran, sharps, and residues declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country exported 3 408 tonnes, showing a gradual reduction of 3.2% from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 34.7%, equating to an annualized rate of 13.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, South Africa, Namibia, and Botswana remained the top buyers of wheat bran, sharps, and residues from Zambia. South Africa accounted for 44.0% of exports in kind, Namibia for 27.2%, and Botswana for 18.1%. Together, these three countries represented 89.4% of Zambia's total exports in kind during this period.

Zambia's export value of wheat bran, sharps, and residues increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 541.0 thousand US dollars, up 1.6% from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 timeframe, export value decreased by 18.3%, with an annualized rate of 6.5%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 456.7 thousand US dollars, which also experienced the largest decline of 31.0%. In contrast, 2019 saw the largest increase of 16.6%.

Between 2017 and 2020, South Africa, Namibia, and Botswana were the main destinations for Zambia's wheat bran, sharps, and residues in value terms. South Africa represented 41.3% of exports, Namibia 27.3%, and Botswana 18.9%. Collectively, these three markets accounted for 87.5% of total export value.
