The market for wheat bran, sharps and residues in the Netherlands underwent considerable changes from 2018 to 2024. Volume contracted sharply from 439.4 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 314.2 thousand tonnes in 2020, marking a decline of over 28%.

A turning point came in 2021, with the market recovering to 399.5 thousand tonnes. This was followed by a surge of more than 50% in 2022, pushing volume above 600 thousand tonnes for the first time in the period.

After the rapid expansion, the market stabilized in 2023 at 605.2 thousand tonnes before rising again to 649.5 thousand tonnes in 2024, establishing a new high for the Dutch wheat bran and residues sector.

After two years of decline, the Netherlands saw an increase in the production value of wheat bran, sharps, and residues. In 2021, output reached 33 344 thousand US dollars, marking a significant 17.9% rise compared to the previous year. Over the 2018-2021 period, production decreased by 6.9%, with an average annual decline of 2.4%. The lowest value was recorded in 2020 at 28 287 thousand US dollars, while the largest drop occurred in 2019 with an 11.9% decrease.

The Netherlands experienced a third consecutive year of decline in the production volume of wheat bran, sharps, and residues. In 2021, output totaled 152.6 thousand tonnes, representing a 4.1% decrease from 2020. Between 2018 and 2021, production fell by 27.2%, equating to an average annual decline of 10.0%.

In 2021, the Netherlands exported 138.6 thousand tonnes of wheat bran, sharps, and residues, reflecting a substantial 22.9% decrease compared to the previous year. Over the 2018-2021 period, exports declined by 30.2%, with an average annual decrease of 11.3%. The largest drop was recorded in 2019 at 23.2%, while the highest increase occurred in 2020 with a 17.8% rise.

From 2018 to 2021, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and Belgium were the primary destinations for the Netherlands' wheat bran, sharps, and residues exports by volume. Ireland accounted for 44.6% of exports, the United Kingdom for 31.1%, and Belgium for 19.5%, together absorbing 95.2% of total export volume.

In 2021, the value of wheat bran, sharps, and residues exports from the Netherlands amounted to 32 716 thousand US dollars, representing a 5.1% decrease year-over-year. Between 2018 and 2021, export value declined by 10.7%, with an average annual decrease of 3.7%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 29 794 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 18.7%. The highest increase occurred in 2020 with a 15.8% rise.
