The market for maize bran, sharps and residues in ECOWAS grew from about 757 thousand tons in 2018 to 808 thousand tons in 2023. This overall increase was interrupted by a significant downturn in 2021, when the market volume fell sharply to approximately 519 thousand tons.

Following the 2021 low, the market recovered over the next two years, returning to 771 thousand tons in 2022 and reaching its peak for the period at 808 thousand tons in 2023. The rebound restored the market to a growth trajectory by the end of the observed timeframe.

The period was characterized by substantial volatility, with the market contracting by over 260 thousand tons in a single year before staging a complete recovery. The net result was a market approximately 7% larger in 2023 than it was at the start of the period in 2018.

In 2019, ECOWAS produced 748.6 thousand tons of maize bran, sharps and residues, marking the lowest production level in recent years with a 1.1% decline. Production then increased by 5.0% in 2020 to reach 785.9 thousand tons. Over the four-year period from 2017 to 2020, overall production grew by 4.2%, representing an average annual growth rate of 1.4%.

ECOWAS experienced a second consecutive year of declining production value for maize bran, sharps and residues. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 179.8 million US dollars, reflecting an 8.0% increase from the previous year. By 2020, production value had fallen to 142.7 million US dollars, representing a 15.1% decrease from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production value declined by 14.2%, equivalent to an average annual decrease of 5.0%.

ECOWAS exports of maize bran, sharps and residues increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 3,887 tons, representing a substantial 1,547.3% increase compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports grew by 7,469.3%, with an average annual growth rate of 323.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, the Philippines and India were the two primary destinations for ECOWAS exports of maize bran, sharps and residues. The Philippines accounted for 57.2% of total export flows, while India represented 3.2%. Together, these two markets received 60.4% of all exports during this period.

ECOWAS export revenues from maize bran, sharps and residues increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports totaled 706.0 thousand US dollars, representing a dramatic 1,231.9% increase compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, export revenues grew by 6,131.8%, with an average annual growth rate of 296.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, the Philippines, India, and Sweden were the main buyers of maize bran, sharps and residues from ECOWAS in value terms. The Philippines accounted for 56.3% of export value, India represented 4.2%, and Sweden accounted for 2.1%. Together, these three markets comprised 62.5% of total export value during this period.

Import volumes of maize bran, sharps and residues into ECOWAS showed significant volatility between 2017 and 2020. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2018 at 210 tons, representing a 47.0% decline from the previous year. Imports then surged by 128.6% in 2019, followed by a further 24.8% increase in 2020 to reach 601 tons. The difference between the peak in 2020 and the trough in 2018 was 2.9 times.

From 2017 to 2020, Belgium, the United States, and Ukraine were notable suppliers of maize bran, sharps and residues to ECOWAS. Belgium accounted for 3.6% of import volume, the United States represented 3.5%, and Ukraine accounted for 3.1%. However, their combined share reached only 10.2% of total imports, with the remaining 89.8% distributed among numerous other trading partners.

The lowest import value was recorded in 2018 at 57.1 thousand US dollars, representing a 54.9% decline from the previous year. Import values then surged by 205.8% in 2019, followed by a further 46.5% increase in 2020. The difference between the peak in 2020 and the trough in 2018 was 4.5 times.

From 2017 to 2020, the import market for maize bran, sharps and residues into ECOWAS was highly diversified in value terms. Belgium accounted for 21.0% of import value, Ireland represented 7.9%, and the United States accounted for 5.6%. Together, these three countries comprised just 34.6% of total import value, with the remaining 65.4% distributed among numerous other trading partners.
