Earlier Report Observations

The Chilean market for wheat bran and residues expanded from 2018 to 2019, supported by the national circular economy strategy. The Production Development Corporation (CORFO) and the Ministry of the Environment's Circular Economy Office, established in 2018, promoted the valorization of agro-industrial waste, including wheat residues, to create new by-products. This policy drive encouraged higher processing of wheat by-products, contributing to a production increase from 319 thousand tonnes to 347.5 thousand tonnes and market volume growth from 322.6 thousand tonnes to 349.8 thousand tonnes.

After a slight dip in 2020, market volume recovered to 358.5 thousand tonnes in 2021. That year, wheat maintained its largest planted area in Chile at 226 thousand hectares, ensuring ample raw material for residue generation. Additionally, CONAF's restrictions on burning agricultural waste, a common practice for weed control and fertilization, redirected wheat residues toward processing facilities, supporting production levels. A surge in imports to 17.1 thousand tonnes also bolstered total supply.

The market contracted sharply in 2022 to 320.1 thousand tonnes, influenced by the Russia-Ukraine conflict which disrupted global wheat trade and introduced uncertainty into local supply chains. While Chilean mills held reserves, the international turmoil affected planning and likely constrained feedstock availability. Production fell to 313.1 thousand tonnes. In 2023, the market stabilized around 313.6 thousand tonnes, with a minor production decrease to 311.8 thousand tonnes.
