Earlier Report Observations

The market for wheat bran, sharps and residues in Eastern Europe showed initial stability, with volumes around 5.44 million tons in 2018 and 2019. This period was underpinned by a longer-term industry shift where the share of wheat waste in Russian processing had risen significantly, reflecting increased utilization. Growth resumed in 2020 as the market volume reached 5.61 million tons, driven by the initial development of deep grain processing for products like starches and gluten, stimulated by import substitution and export opportunities.

After a minor contraction to 5.53 million tons in 2021, the market expanded again to 5.67 million tons in 2022. This recovery was supported by a robust wheat harvest of 104.2 million tons in Russia, which supplied raw material for the growing deep processing sector and its production of modified starches and maltodextrins.

A sharp market correction followed in 2023, with volume falling to 4.92 million tons. This decline was directly linked to a reduction in grain harvests across Russia after several record seasons, which decreased the availability of wheat residues for further processing.
