Earlier Report Observations

The linseed oil-cake market in Eastern Europe expanded significantly in 2019, with volume reaching 83 thousand tonnes. This growth was primarily driven by the continued expansion of oil flax cultivation areas in Russia, which increased the raw material base for oil and cake production. While export shipments of cake also rose substantially during this period, the boost in domestic output supported overall market availability.

After 2019, the market volume entered a period of contraction, declining to 58 thousand tonnes by 2023. This trend occurred alongside increased domestic consumption of linseed cake in feed production due to its high protein content and organic status. However, production became less economically attractive as global prices for oilseeds, vegetable oils, and meals, including linseed cake, weakened. Concurrently, the industry underwent deep modernization of extraction equipment to improve process efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

The market's development was also influenced by strategic industry investments. In 2022, plans were announced for the launch of a major oilseed processing plant by the company Aston, which promised to significantly increase future production capacity for both oil and cake. Nevertheless, production volumes of linseed oil and cake decreased in 2023, and the trend of declining profitability and output continued into early 2024.
