The wheat bran, sharps and residues market in Eastern Africa began the period with a volume of 1 379 thousand tons in 2018, supported by substantial milling infrastructure in Kenya where large-scale millers had an estimated daily wheat processing capacity of 3 600 metric tons. Market volume then gradually contracted to 1 296 thousand tons in 2019 and 1 277 thousand tons in 2020.

A sharp recovery occurred in 2021, with the market expanding by 16.5% to reach 1 488 thousand tons.

The market retreated over the next two years, falling to 1 334 thousand tons in 2022 and further to 1 168 thousand tons in 2023. The 2022 decline coincided with a 16.1% drop in wheat production attributed to adverse weather and market fluctuations, which constrained raw material availability for bran production. In 2023, high costs of wheat bran and pollard for animal feed manufacturers led to miller losses and closures, depressing local demand and contributing to a surge in exports that reduced domestic market volume.

In Eastern Africa, production of wheat bran, sharps and residues reached 1 754 thousand tonnes in 2020, marking a slight decrease of 0.7% from the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, overall production grew by 2.2%, with an average annual growth rate of 0.7%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 1 694 thousand tonnes, while the highest came in 2019 with 1 767 thousand tonnes. Production saw its sharpest decline in 2018, dropping by 1.3%, and its strongest increase in 2019, rising by 4.3%.

Exports of wheat bran, sharps and residues from Eastern Africa continued to grow for the second year in a row. In 2020, the region exported 502.6 thousand tonnes, up 3.9% from the previous year. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 433.2 thousand tonnes. That year also saw the largest decline, with exports falling by 13.2%. The most significant increase occurred in 2019, when exports jumped by 11.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, the main destinations for Eastern Africa's exports of wheat bran, sharps and residues were Vietnam, accounting for 20.2% of exports in volume, the United Arab Emirates with 19.5%, and Oman at 13.8%. Together, these three countries represented 53.5% of total export flows during this period.

The market displayed an unstable trend over the observed timeframe. Export values fluctuated significantly, with a 1.8-fold difference between the low in 2017 and the high in 2018. In 2020, Eastern Africa exported wheat bran, sharps and residues worth 91.6 million US dollars, showing a slight contraction of 2.5% compared to 2019. The peak value was recorded in 2018 at 127.6 million US dollars. The largest decline occurred in 2019, with a drop of 26.4%, while the most substantial increase was in 2018, rising by 79.9%.

During the 2017–2020 period, Vietnam was the leading destination in value terms, accounting for 34.5% of exports, followed by the United Arab Emirates at 12.7% and Qatar at 11.0%. These three countries together made up 58.2% of total export value flows.

Import data reveals irregular changes, pointing to a volatile market environment. Volumes varied dramatically, with a 13.6-fold difference between the minimum in 2019 and the maximum in 2017. In 2020, Eastern Africa's imports of wheat bran, sharps and residues reached 25.2 thousand tonnes, surging by 98.5% compared to 2019. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 12.7 thousand tonnes, which also saw the sharpest decline of 89.2%.

The import market showed signs of volatility throughout the observed period. There was an 11.8-fold variation between the minimum value in 2019 and the maximum in 2017. In 2020, Eastern Africa imported approximately 4.6 million US dollars worth of wheat bran, sharps and residues, representing an intense year-over-year rise of 99.7%. The lowest import value was recorded in 2019 at 2.3 million US dollars, which also experienced the largest decline of 89.1%.
