The market for cottonseed oil-cake in Eastern Africa experienced significant fluctuations between 2018 and 2023. After starting at 143 thousand tons in 2018, the market volume contracted to 126 thousand tons in 2019 before rebounding sharply to 159 thousand tons in 2020. Another decline followed in 2021, bringing the market size down to 133 thousand tons, but sustained growth resumed in 2022 and 2023, reaching 160 thousand tons and then 189 thousand tons respectively.

The market recovery from 2021 was supported by a context of supply constraints for alternative oil cakes like soy, which affected feed manufacturers across the region. This shortage of raw materials highlighted the importance of cottonseed cake in the feed sector and coincided with the period of volume expansion. The market's upward trajectory continued into 2023, with volume growing by 18% to nearly 189 thousand tons.

Substantial public and private investments aim to transform the market's foundation. In 2024, Kenya's Agriculture and Food Authority launched cotton seed milling equipment in Busia County and outlined ambitious targets to expand cotton cultivation and processing capacity significantly by 2027. New ginneries in coastal regions began producing cottonseed oil and cake, creating additional value for farmers and aiming to reduce import dependence for animal feed ingredients.

Eastern Africa's cottonseed oil-cake production has grown for the third year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 235.4 thousand tonnes, marking a significant 16.5% increase from the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production rose by 67.2%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 18.7%.

Exports cottonseed oil-cake from Eastern Africa

After increasing for two years, Eastern Africa's exports of cottonseed oil-cake saw a decline. In 2020, exports amounted to 94 158 tonnes, down 2.9% from the prior year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports grew by 103.4%, with an average annual rate of 26.7%. The peak was in 2019 at 96 978 tonnes, which also saw the largest annual increase of 67.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, the main destinations for Eastern Africa's cottonseed oil-cake exports were South Africa, accounting for 41.0% of the volume, China with 19.3%, and Namibia at 1.7%. Together, these three markets represented 62.0% of total exports.

The export market showed an unstable trend over this period. Exports reached their lowest point in 2017 and peaked in 2018, with a two-fold difference between these years. In 2020, Eastern Africa exported 19 104 thousand US dollars worth of cottonseed oil-cake, a gradual decline of 3.8% from 2019. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 22 630 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest annual increase of 96.7%. The largest annual decrease occurred in 2019, at 12.2%.

Between 2017 and 2020, the largest buyers of cottonseed oil-cake from Eastern Africa in value terms were South Africa, with 44.6% of exports, China at 9.8%, and Namibia contributing 1.6%. Combined, these countries made up 56.1% of total export value.

Imports of cottonseed oil-cake into Eastern Africa fell for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports totaled 17 847 tonnes, a 13.3% drop from 2019. From 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 21.2%, averaging an annual decline of 7.6%. The highest import volume was in 2018 at 23 602 tonnes, which also experienced the largest annual increase of 4.3%.

The largest annual decrease occurred in 2019, at 19.9%.
