Sunflower-seed oilcake production in Eastern Africa expanded consistently from 528.5 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 626.4 thousand tonnes in 2023. This growth was driven by government policies, notably the Edible Oil Crops Promotion Project launched in 2018, which aimed to increase domestic edible oil output through seed distribution and agro-processing support. The commissioning of a new edible oil processing facility in Lamu County in 2023 further enhanced local crushing capacity, contributing to higher oilcake output.

Market volume for sunflower-seed oilcake fluctuated over the period, peaking at 621.3 thousand tonnes in 2021 before declining to 542.5 thousand tonnes in 2023. A sharp rise in exports and a reduction in imports, particularly after 2022, were key drivers of this volatility. The disruption of global sunflower oil supplies following the Russia-Ukraine war altered regional trade flows, while earlier challenges in sunflower cultivation—such as pest pressures and soil fertility issues noted in 2019—introduced variability into production yields.
