The market for wheat bran, sharps, and residues in Zimbabwe expanded significantly from 43.2 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 113.5 thousand tonnes in 2023. This growth was primarily driven by a steady increase in domestic wheat production, which raised the availability of milling by-products. The Agricultural Marketing Authority played a key role in promoting wheat production as part of national food security initiatives.

Market volume rose sharply in 2020 and 2021, reaching 99.9 thousand tonnes, before a temporary dip to 82.2 thousand tonnes in 2022. The market rebounded strongly in 2023, setting a new record, supported by continued growth in wheat output and processing activity.

Zimbabwe's production of wheat bran, sharps, and residues has increased for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 68 770 tonnes, marking a 10.7% gain compared to 2019. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 8.8%, which translates to an average annual rate of 2.9%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 61 686 tonnes, with the largest decline that year being 2.4%.
