Between 2018 and 2020, the market for wheat bran and residues in Mauritania expanded from 100.3 thousand tons to 114.9 thousand tons. The initial stability was supported by the government's 'Emel' food crisis plan, which released 140 000 tons of cereals into consumption and facilitated grain imports through tax suspensions and measures against abnormal practices, maintaining supply in a country highly dependent on imported wheat.

Market volume dropped sharply to 92.2 thousand tons in 2021 before recovering to 104.9 thousand tons in 2022. This recovery was driven by markedly lower supplies of local cereals from Mali and Senegal, which increased reliance on imported wheat. High global prices for wheat and hydrocarbons negatively affected food access, but also spurred wheat imports to meet processing demand, boosting the bran market.

In 2023, volume eased to 98.8 thousand tons amid a general decline in cereal prices, including an 8% drop for wheat, while local cereal and bean availability remained low, pushing households toward imported wheat and rice. Security deterioration along the Malian border intensified refugee flows, straining local resources. For 2024, massive wheat imports were launched to offset one of the worst national cereal harvests since the 1980s, with a strategic stockpile of 1 million tons of soft wheat planned, as unfavorable climatic conditions like drought further stressed domestic production.

The most significant production decline occurred in 2019, at 0.1%, while the largest increase was recorded in 2018, with a rise of 6.5%.
