Between 2018 and 2023, the Surinamese market for wheat and meslin flour and cereals experienced notable fluctuations in both domestic production and imports, leading to a volatile overall market volume. After a gradual decline from 22 201 t in 2018 to 19 790 t in 2021, the market rebounded to 22 539 t by 2023.

Domestic production saw a significant surge in 2021, reaching 18 095 t, which was more than 50% higher than the previous year. However, this increase coincided with a sharp drop in imports to just 2 147 t, down from 8 833 t in 2020. In the following years, production levels adjusted while import volumes recovered partially, contributing to the market's recovery.

By 2023, the market volume had stabilized near its 2018 level, with production at 17 241 t and imports at 5 407 t, indicating a shift toward greater self-sufficiency compared to earlier years when imports played a larger role.
